Staff Propulsion Design Engineer

Ursa Major’s teams moves fast and do a lot with little. We are looking for a skilled, fast learning individual who will support our engine design efforts. This role will be part of the technical organization, responsible for clean sheet designs of a variety of propulsion hardware ranging from combustors to actuators. Candidates will be expected to have ownership from the initial concept phase to a production-ready design and may need to support multiple engine programs simultaneously.

As a Staff Design Engineer, you will help lead and grow the Design Engineering team and be a critical element to the success of Ursa Major Technologies. You will leverage your experience to help drive innovative solutions for some of rocketry's most complex problem statements.
Colorado law requires us to tell you the base compensation range of this role, which is $115,000 - $200,000, determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to design associates to advance their proficiency.
  • Cradle-to-grave design support, from preliminary through detailed design, development, validation, certification, manufacturing, and operational service of various engine components including gimbals, actuators, pumps and combustors.
  • Engage the team in the resolution of technical problems within program schedule milestones.
  • Design modifications of existing components and prototypes to increase performance, improve manufacturability or resolve limitations.
  • Collaborate with team members to write, review, and update work instructions for the assembly of engine components as well as establish appropriate acceptance and qualification tests.
  • Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics.
Requirements
  • 15+ years of relevant mechanical design experience.
  • B.S. in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering (or other related technical subject area).
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer aided design and drafting.
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity in all its forms as well as contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive and professional relationships.
Desired Experience
  • M.S. or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering (or related technical discipline).
  • Design for metal additive manufacturing processes.
  • Liquid propellant rocket engine design, test, or analysis.
  • Familiarity with oxygen-rich staged combustion engine cycle.
  • Working level knowledge of PTC Creo or Siemens NX CAD programs and Windchill PLM software.
